Another area of focus for our group is the investigation of QCD at very low energies (the non-perturbative regime), using hadronic parity violation (a signature of the weak interaction between hadrons -- primarily neutrons and protons) as a probe for short range quark-quark correlations at low energy. There are several ways to do this experimentally, and we use cold neutron capture processes at spallation neutron sources: The Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (SNS). The group of people currently working on our efforts at the SNS include four active faculty, one research associate, and two graduate students. Information about these people and their role on our experiments can be obtained via the left hand menu. More information about our efforts at the SNS can be obtained via the top menu. | Attach:SubAtomScatt.swf Δ |
Our current effort is the second phase of the NPDGamma experiment ( at the SNS), which is being commissioned and is scheduled to begin production running in the Fall of 2011.
A new future effort in preparation is the n3He n3He experiment, which is to take place after NPDGamma, with installation starting late in 2012.
Previously, the group was working on the now completed first phase of NPDGamma at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Neutron Science Center LANSCE. A description of the experiment and the results can be found in ( PRC 1) and references within.
Contributions of this group to these efforts include detector development, simulations and analysis.
