An integral part of academia is academic freedom and with that comes some self-governance/self-management; thus a professor's duties include service to the department and the university. I have served on various departmental committees including the Honors/Majors, Curriculum, Radiation & Safety and Recruitment & Outreach Committees, as well as multiple faculty search committees. For several years I was the faculty advisor to our Organization of Undergaduate Physics Students (OPUS). I also have served on numerous MSc and PhD thesis defense committees.
I have represented the department to the Faculty of Science on the Research Advisory Team, Science (yes, RATS) Committee and the Indigenous Initiatives Committee for several years. I also serve as the chair of the Alumni sub-committee of the Indigenous Initiatives Committee. I also was a member of the Faculty Outreach Committee for one year; the committee won the University Outreach Award for the success of the Science Rendezvous organization that year.
I am the Chair of the Nuclear Physics Education Scientific Working Group for the Canadian Institute of Nuclear Physics (CINP), and helped write the CINP brief to the NSERC Long Range Planning Committee. I have served as a member of the Policy and Planning Advisory Committee (PPAC) at TRIUMF - Canada's National Nuclear Physics Laboratory - for several years. I served as Chair of the Jefferson Lab Hall A Coordinating Committee. I have recently been nominated as a member of the APS Forum on Physics and Society.
