Research interests:

My work is primarily to perform tests of the Standard Model of Particles and Interactions using highly precise electron scattering measurements performed at Jefferson Lab, some of which are complementary to those performed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. I also use the property of parity-violation in the weak interaction to study nuclear and nucleon properties. I am working on several ongoing and future experiments at Jefferson Lab, which is located in Newport News, VA: Qweak, PREX, CREX, and MOLLER, as well as a few other Hall A experiments, such as APEX, a search for a dark matter candidate. My thesis work was on Qweak and G0.

The Standard Model summarizes our current knowledge of the fundamental particles and the interactions they can undergo, but it isn't the whole story. For example, we still don't know what 95% of the universe is made of! The unknown stuff is called dark matter and dark energy, because it doesn't interact electromagnetically, and so does not emit light. Tests of the Standard Model search for new physics either by looking for new particles, which requires high energy colliders, such as the LHC, or through precision measurements of quantities which have a definite prediction in the Standard Model. The latter is what I do.

Qweak uses parity violation to measure the weak charge of the proton, but we are really after the weak mixing angle, which has a definite prediction in the Standard Model. Deviations from the predicted value would indicate new physics. MOLLER is a future experiment that will make an ultra-precise measurement of the weak charge of the electron, for the same reason - to test the Standard Model and search for new physics. It will be as precise as the two most precise collider measurements (which happen to disagree with each other by 3 standard deviations). The disagreement would imply different Higgs boson masses in the Standard Model. MOLLER will be precise enough to able to resolve this discrepancy.

PREX and CREX will measure a property of nuclei - the neutron skin, or the weak charge density, of lead and calcium, which tells us about the neutron matter equation of state. This is important for a lot of other fields, such as atomic parity violation, spectroscopy measurements of certain nuclear excitations, and even neutron star structure.

G0 measured the strange quark content of nucleons (protons and neutrons). More specifically, it measured the strange quark contribution to the charge and magnetization distributions of the nucleon.
